Meeting Minutes

.

February 2009

The Doylestown Photography Club enjoyed a full house February 5th, when Professor Emmet Gowin joined us as guest speaker. He mesmerized us all with his tales of his earliest experiences in photography and his interactions with some of the great photographers of the century including his mentor, Harry Callahan, and Frederick Sommer.

Emmet spoke for about 90 minutes, and shared images from his many aerial expeditions, including the devastation after the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. His ongoing interest in the environment was demonstrated in series of shots taken from the air over Alamogordo, New Mexico, scene of numerous nuclear test explosions.

He also shared many photos taken of members of his wife’s family, including a beloved aunt, Maggie. "Maggie" is the title of his new book, a tribute to this woman, her extended family and their community. "Maggie" is a collaboration between Emmet and his wife, Edith, who wrote several essays in the book, and their son, Elijah, whose photos also fill the pages.

Emmet closed the meeting by signing and selling "Maggie", which is available in bookstores, if you missed getting one at the meeting.

Images made by participants on the January field trip were shown and plans have been finalized for the upcoming February field trip. We meet at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Main Street entrance to the Bucks County Parking Garage in Doylestown to carpool.

January 2009

More than 65 persons attended the January meeting. Members Ruth Taylor, Henry Rowin and Charley Callaghan presented work from their respective website. Watch the website for updates, or join the email list...see the link below.

Henry Rowan and Charley Callaghan presented a program on the photographers of the Farm Security Administration photographers from the period 1935- 1942.

Images made by participants on the December field trip were shown and plans were finalized for the upcoming January field trip in search of covered bridges. We meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Main Street entrance to the Bucks County Parking Garage in Doylestown to carpool.

We welcomed five new members in January. Our group continues to grow, and we have rearranged our meeting space to better accommodate the additional participants. During each meeting, we show and discuss members’ work as well as that of our Photographer of the Month. We are planning to purchase a better projector to show these photos. We (the members of the club) are thankful for your donations toward this purchase.

December 2008

Our membership continues to grow as we end the fall season 2008, with plenty of activity! Our first Annual exhibit ended this past weekend with our first annual Holiday party. The exhibit was a outstanding success with a hundreds of prints shown by multiple members and a comfortable stream of viewers. Thank you to all those who made the effort to participate and those who made the trek to The Photography Place to share in the experience. We are indeed fortunate have Deb Derrick helping to put all the details in place.

Our December meeting of the season took place and was attended by over 55 members. It featured a presentation by Drew Wagner on the street photographer Stephen Shore. We all shared in viewing the exhibited works of our photographers as they had opportunities to discuss their motivations.

The field trip into Doylestown for street photography was attended by over 20 members...whoa!

The club is still growing, so to speak, and as we grow, organizational changes will no doubt continue to be made. Our meetings contain opportunities for new members to learn something photography from each other and we encourage you to participate on the every growing committees. Thanks...

The club will be taking its December field trip to various locations around Doylestown where there are interesting barns. Members will meet at the Bucks County Court House parking garage at 9 AM on December 20th.

An educational series of classing will be starting at the photography place in January. Please look on the web site as we will be featuring many new opportunities

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15th at 7 p.m. and will feature a presentation speaker and a discussion of "A Vision Shared".

November 2008

Minutes update pending

October 2008

Our second meeting of the season was held on Oct. 2nd and featured a presentation by Drew Wagner on portrait photographer Imogen Cunnigham, a presentation on the art of nude photography by Bill Marshall, and an educational presentation on portrait photography by Charles Callaghan. Our participation in the Doylestown Arts Festival in early September was a rousing success, even though Saturday was rained out. Fourteen members submitted photos and six of us sold work!

The club is still setting up house, so to speak, and as we grow, organizational changes will no doubt continue to be made. At this juncture, meetings contain opportunities for new members (or attendees who are just interested in finding out more about the club) to learn something about photography and each other. An educational component will be featured monthly, along with a "theme" for that month. We will be attempting to link both our "dead photographer" talks and field trips with the monthly theme.

September 2008

We had a fantastic turnout for the first meeting of the Photo Club for the season. About 15 new members joined, old members returned and fun was had. We discussed the upcoming art festival and photographer Charles Sheeler.

The Doylestown Art Festival came together for a rousing success. We sold a few prints (which in the current economy isn't bad), and had a ton of interest in the club. Thanks to all the members who submitted art, helped pull together the tent and materials and volunteered to work the festival.

Summer 2008

Doylestown Arts Festival - The Photo Club has been accepted by the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance to show at the Doylestown Art Festival. The festival will be held in downtown Doylestown on September 6th and 7th, so we need to start getting ready now. Of note is that one of the stipulations for participation in the festival is that we must offer art for sale to the public - so although one primary goal will be the promotion of the club, we will all have an opportunity to sell some of the photographs we've taken.

DPC will be accepting submissions of photographic art for the festival until Wednesday, August 27th extended to noon on Saturday, August 31st. Please note that the club will be taking a 30% cut of all sales to be put towards the general fund for activities and other expenses over the next year (and we've got some great ideas and a few things in the works for the rest of 2008).

We will be displaying framed art on the walls of the tent and offer matted, "ready-to-frame" photographs in flip-bins (the framed art *will* be available for sale). In order to determine what pieces will initially be displayed if we have more framed submissions than space, we will be setting up a quick-and-dirty judging panel (membership to be determined) - however, all un-selected art will be held in reserve to "fill-in" should display pieces be sold.

Specifics for artwork submission is as follows:

  • Submissions will be dropped off at The Photography Place (contact Charles Callaghan to arrange a date and time, as he may be traveling off-and-on)
  • Up to 10 pieces, maximum, per member (maximum of 3 framed works)
  • Maximum print size of 16X20 (smaller sizes are ok)
  • All prints must be matted and "ready-to-frame" (a backing board is highly suggested)
  • All unframed prints should have them enclosed in clear plastic sleeves/bags.
  • Due to the variety of sizes involved we are asking that each member provide his/her own bags. An excellent source for these is www.clearbags.com.
  • A completed label must be affixed to the back of ALL submitted art with photographer's name, the title of the piece, size, price, and any other information about the material or medium (e.g. - "archival print").

Labels can be obtained by emailing us [see Contact page].

We also need volunteers to man the tent and for setup and tear-down on both Saturday and Sunday. The festival hours are from 10am until 5pm on Saturday and from 11am until 5pm on Sunday and will be split into 2 hour shifts of 2 people. We're keeping track of the slots that are filled and available here. Harry Snyder has graciously loaned us the use of his tent and sides, so that is taken care of. Thanks Harry!!!

PLEASE consider volunteering - spend a couple hours talking to people about photography and the club in the booth and then wander around the festival a bit!

July 2008

We had a great turnout for the last meeting of the Photo Club for this season! Over thirty-seven photographers came out to share images and ideas. Charles Callaghan gave a great presentation on Edward Weston, one of the early masters of photography; and Charles Callaghan, Bob Greenberg and Mort Metersky all gave presentations on post processing and the thought processes from capture to final image.

We'd like to thank all of the members for helping to make the club a success.

The club home at ThePhotographyPlace.com will be improving, so watch this space! Please note the new link to the club Calendar of Events, above-left. Dates for upcoming meets, field trips and other events will be posted there. We hope to improve the experience soon - but for now, events over the next few months will simply be listed chronologically.

Members - The Next Field Trip will be on Aug 17th. We will be going to Princeton, New Jersey to do some street photography. Details to follow.

Doylestown Arts Festival - We still need volunteers for the booth on September 6th and 7th as well as for setup & teardown on both days. The booth schedule can be found via the link in the Photo Club Information section above.
