A Winter Photographic Workshop in the Pennsylvania Coal Region
Join Ed Dougert, photographer / author "Black Coal",
on Site in the PA Coal Region.
The Pennsylvania anthracite coal region has a history and graphic beauty offering endless photographic opportunities. Coal mining once dominated all social, economic, and environmental aspects in this five hundred square mile area of Pennsylvania, shaping the land, the lives, and the history of the region. The shadows and remains of this unique industry are beckoning to be explored by the artist.
We will probe the landscape, examine the abstract possibilities, document and inspect with a journalistic view, an industry’s decline and the visual material this provides. Participants in this unique workshop will visit and learn about the coal region from a number of sites related to coal production, including abandoned mines, a coal fired steam engine restoration and structures from the town of Centralia, where a mine fire still burns underground. Participants will be encouraged to make photographs that interpret the often stark landscape and its contents. Historical background will be provided at and about these vast and fascinating locations. This workshop will offer a deep and unique view of gathered knowledge from Ed Dougert’s 12 years of personal photographic study in the area. It is an opportunity not to be missed. This workshop is strictly limited to 8 participants.
( NOTE : As the name implies, this will be a Winter workshop! Warm clothing, boots, mittens, etc. are essential and extra camera batteries. The areas we travel to are extraordinary at this time of year, hence the choice of season. Please plan accordingly. TPP Management )
