THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

A short experience in style and images will carry participants to the magic of England’s “Golden Age” in photographic invention along with its colorful cast of characters into the hard edged reportage period of the 1930’s & 40’s, into the 50’s with discussion of such important works as Robert Frank’s “The Americans” and Gene Smith’s Minnimata series and much more.

We will view an endless collection of "GREATS" offering an awareness of photographer's styles. Showing their work will suggest many transitional thoughts.

We will survey of the 20th centurys great fashion and portrait masters and some notable photographers, while briefly entering the infant world of the digital camera and its changing role creating today's history.

This will be a hands on demonstration course, using various cameras and process techniques to explain the challenges of early days. We will use our studio for opportunities to learn for old world techniques, both in portraiture and still life. This is not just history but the value we can experience from understanding the lessons of history. This course over 3 evenings enriches the cultural values offered by photography, as it relates to our role in the every changing world.

Objective: To enrich and learn the experiences of early photography / photographers and appreciate its / their contribution to our culture.
